X2 Interviews

Bjorn Lynne, Musician for X2

Did you do the sound on the original Project X?

I did one song for the game, the rest was done by Allister Brimble. So with a bit of goodwill I guess you can say that Allister and I did it together.

What is there about the sound that's special? Any tricks like surround sound, stereo panning etc?

Yes, all sound effects will be panned left/right according to where on the screen the sound is triggered. Also, when objects are "in the back", i.e. deeper into the landscape, then the sounds they make are lower in volume and have more reverb, to create a realistic soundscape to the whole thing.

What about the music. Is it reactive, background, what? What about the style of the music. Is it ravey, techno, jungle, futuristic, synthey, what?

The music is fast (all above 140 bpm) rave/techno style with near-CD quality even though it is music played in realtime by the Playstation, as opposed to ,played directly from the CD.

What do you prefer about sound on the Playstation compared to other platforms?

The Playstation has great sound compression that compresses any 16-bit ,sample at 4:1 (i.e. a 100 kb sample only takes 25 kb), with only neglible loss in sound quality. So even if the Playstation really only has 512 kb of sound memory, this memory is heavily compressed, and in practice, it means that you have some 2 mb of uncompressed sound memory, which is plenty to play around with. Also, the Playstation has reverb and echo built into the hardware, and each instrument and sound effect can have it's own unique reverb/echo settings. This helps to "beef up" the sound effects as well as the music.

If there's anything else you think would be appreciated by a Playstation gamer, please mention it.

We are also considering doing a "jukebox" thing that people can use to play the game-music without actually playing the game. If we do this, lots of additional full CD-quality, studio-recorded, music will be on the CD. This music will be available from the jukebox (or any standard music CD player), in addition to the music that's used in the actual game.
