Can we change the smilies?

Post by Zeor » Wed Jun 12, 2013 6:36 pm

Maybe I'm just used to the old forum's charming and tiny ones, but I mean, I can't be the only one who says...

:D :) ;) :( :o :? :x :P

Ugh.

A couple of them are okay though. But I think we should explore alternatives if possible. Maybe even make some new ones. Somebody around here must still be talented.

:( :o

These three are unspeakably stupid-looking. So yes, I agree.

Yeah I don't fancy them much either, I don't know why they changed them in phpBB3 (to fit the text size I guess?), I preferred the old ones: Image Image Image Image Image

I can restore the old ones if people prefer, or if anyone's got other alternatives, I'm all ears. Maybe even the old Team17 ones, though they were rather tiny.

I think the problem with the new ones is that they all have chins. Smilies shouldn't have chins, that's crazy talk

Whipped a little something up. Image

I tried to keep the same simplistic style as the one used by the T17 forums, while making them a bit bigger (seriously the old ones were tiny).
Should I continue?

Yes please, these are really damn fine. It's not like it were impossible to use the old smileys though Image as the forum is technically still up.

I like them in this order...

Best..|Kilburn's
.......|Old ones
Worst|New ones.

That is all.

Cross smiley looks unusual. Can you define his eyebrows a bit?

Wait, which one is the "cross" smiley? Do you mean the very last one? It does look different from the others but I couldn't find a way to make it work otherwise. Should I make the eye outlines a bit darker?

Like this? Image

Oh also, I'm most likely going to leave soon so here's an archive, just in case.

Splendiforous. The confused smiley (last on the third row) looks a bit weird though, it's practically the same as the smile, while it should probably be something more like this.

Also if you could come up with matches for all the phpBB stuff so we don't end up with orphaned smileys, that'd be swell:
:D :) ;) :( :o  :? 8-) :x :P      :-| :!: :?:    :geek: :ugeek:
Otherwise I'll match them up myself.

"Cross" is British for "angry."

oh I remember I had a nice collection of WA-styled worm smiles, they were just so good, but I'm afraid I lost it forever
but I'll keep searching. they HAVE to be somewhere, I most likely just forgot the place.
there are also italian smilies. but I doubt that they'll simply allow us to use them  they worked hard on them

Oh. Well that's good to know, hah. Yeah okay I'll try to make the eyebrows a bit darker.

Already sent those to SupSuper but I thought I'd post them here as well for good measure.

Barely ever used in that context as of the past few decades, no. I mean, the meaning is still technically there, sure, but nobody uses it.

Also to watch out for, "mad" means "crazy," and "pissed" means "drunk." English is wacky!

Pissed has various meanings, all equally delightful.
"Wanna go out an' get pissed?" - Want to get drunk?
"He really pissed me off!" - He really annoyed/upset me
"Back in a 'mo. Gotta take a piss." - Back in a minute, I need to urinate.
Worm Mad - is he a mad worm or a person mad about worms? I'll give you a clue - it's not the first one.
