Potential Buy-Outs
Both Codemasters and Sony are working closely with Team17 at the moment, and both have a history of buying companies they are closely associated with. Sony have purchased more companies than I can count on one hand - companies such as Psygnosis and Gremlin Graphics. Codemasters own Sensible Software, amongst others. There is the worry that the companies may put in an offer for Team17.
Not that they would accept, of course. Hopefully. But I would not be surprised if one of them put an offer in...

Team17 still have an agreement with THQ over the DS/PSP versions of Worms, which I take as a positive sign.

Sony bought Gremlin? I thought they just quietly disappeared... and I haven't seen anything with a Psygnosis or Gremlin logo in ages. You'd think that when a high-profile company such as those gets bought by a publisher, they continue to use the brand for recognition. Most publishers do at least give some clue about what development team they used for a particular game, but I guess Sony is not one of them...
Please don't feed the grues.

Actually after doing some more research, Gremlin Graphics may have been one of the studios purchased by Atari (nee Infogrames). Some sites say Sony, others say Atari. Even still neither are known for giving credit where it's due either.
The question is - can Team17 continue to survive on their own and produce new titles outside of the Worms franchise...?

To quote another famous game franchise which sadly wasn't continued:Squirminator2k wrote:The question is - can Team17 continue to survive on their own and produce new titles outside of the Worms franchise...?

Is it the one I just referenced in the "Arcade Pool" thread?

God I hope they don't get bought. This is one reason why capitilism is bad.

Look how S2K tried to change the topic after that one.Worm Mad wrote:I'm surprised that Codemasters haven't tried to buy Dream17 up while they're at it.
Or maybe they already have
None of my projects (Minus One converter, W3D/W4 Map Viewer, and WMapEditor) are endorsed, supported or otherwise affiliated with Dream17. I just find Dream17 forums to be a nice place to share and discuss my work with others.

What I meant by that comment was that, for the moment, Team17 seem to be safe. I will admit to not knowing a tremendous lot about the World of Biz-ee-ness, but I'd assume that so long as the agreement with THQ is in place, they can't really get bought out.K^2 wrote:Look how S2K tried to change the topic after that one.
Can they?

But without capitalism they wouldn't exist in the first place and computer games would be stuck a decade in the past. Capitalism is brilliant for gamers in the non-ideological sense (which I'm sure is what you are referring to, since the ideological sense wouldn't make a blind bit of difference, really).OldSkoolCrazy wrote:Glod I hope they don't get bought. I don't hate capitalism. I think some aspects are good, but too much is bad. You can't have just pure capitalism or pure socialism or anything pure for that matter. It should be a balance of these different ideologies.
Edit: I just realized the word g o d is changed to god.

Jeeze, If Team 17 gets bought out i hope it isnt by sony. They aren't exactly doing well in the gamng industry as of late...But i will cry if Worms is discontinued or ruined(Like CNC). Really. I think they need to make a NEW 2d Worms(My understanding is worms open warfare is just Original worms Remade with prettier graphics).

If they do get bought it'll end up with them developing games and their buying company publishing them. If you think about it, a lack of publisher interest is why they haven't been making much but Worms games in the recent past.
If the Team still self-published their titles, then this wouldn't be so much of a concern.
