Alien Breed 2005 Speculation

Post by Squirminator2k » Thu Apr 21, 2005 1:47 pm

...Which is a completely different from AB2K4 (despite what the Softography+ currently says... hmm, methinks I shall be updating that tomorrow). This new as-yet unannoucned Alien Breed title deserves a little... well, speculation don't you think...?

I have a feeling that Team17 have been asked to produce another FPS, hence the lack of interest in AB2K4's Dark Alliance style gameplay (not surprising, considering they use the same Snowblind Engine). The problem with that is while AB3D worked fine on the Amiga, AB3DII was not so good. Team17 certainly know how to construct a Game Engine, but the problem lies in their inability to produce a playable FPS.

Hopefully, Team17 have learnt from the mistakes of AB3DII, and if the next Alien Breed game is an FPS maybe it'll be, I d'know, good. However I suspect if this is the case Team17 will be licensing an engine from elseware, for example the Doom or Half-Life engine.

Thoughts? Comments? Bagels?

I'm not sure what to expect (if this all is really true). Personally, I'm not really hoping for another cheap FPS, rather something in the style of the classic games (AB, ABII, TA). AB2004 looked good IMO, and it's sad to hear it has been cancelled.

Anyhow, what about those bagels?

A thought: The AB logo is fairly prominantly positioned on the Team17.com splash screen - does that not suggest to you that a new AB game may be in the works...?

No, it doesn't; you've put too much weight on this fact.

I'd love to see a new AB game from the Team, but it's not exactly prominently positioned, it's just... there. It's almost abscured by all the Worms logos.

I'll be very surprised if there is another AB game, but they may surprise us all yet.

I take the fact that the logo is there on the splash screen as a good sign.

It's a good sign in that they haven't forgotten about the AB series, but I still only think it's there because it was their other successful franchise back in The Day.

I hope they make a good FPS out of it. I'll admit, I love FPS. However if it is generic I despise them.

[fanboyism]It would be cool if they used the Source engine.:p[/fanboyism]

No. No no. AB3D was good, but AB3DII was terrible. Terrible terrible. It looked nice, but it played like a piece of wet cardboard that had been crapped on by some kind of mentally unstable goat. No, I much prefer the classic AB games. We need more of that, please.

I think FPSes either need to be really, really atmospheric (such as Alien Vs Predator 2) or really, really pointless (such as Doom or Serious Sam) to be enjoyable. Doom 3 took the atmosphere too far, I think, and Half-Life just seems to try too hard. Bah.

Half Life 2 is why I love FPS, Doom and Serious Sam are why I don't like them.:p There just too generic.

Edit: Well, actually Sirous Sam seems crazy enough that I would enjoy it so I want to give it a try.

Doom is fine, but that's because it's totally pointless.

The first Doom games were good of course and unique for their time but Doom 3 isn't that great.

Serious Sam has more in common with Smash TV than it does with Doom.

One thing no FPS of today has that the oldies did, was huge maze-like levels where you spent more time looking for the exit than killing baddies.

I actually really don't like that. It frustrates me. I like intelligent puzzles that boggle your mind like Myst. If an FPS can pull some decent puzzles like that with some amazing killing action that would be a great combination.

I can appreciate both styles of gameplay. Both Myst and Doom are in my favorite games list.

I wish there was more cooperative play in FPSs.

A 2D overhead game would be refreshing

Post by Jonah » Wed Jan 04, 2006 6:09 pm

Hi,

To be honest, I'm a tad tired with FPS games at the moment. I wish that big developer would take a shot at the 2D overhead shooting genre again. For a time, FPS was refreshing because of all the 2D stuff. Now however everything just appears to be 3D in the world of platformers and shooters. I'm just glad that at least on handhelds like the DS (and even the GBA) that 2D stuff like Sonic and Mario are available.

Rainbow Islands Revolution anybody?

Another FPS game wouldn't be something i would be thrilled with, unless it was special in some way or had very good multiplayer (both would be best)

but a new AB game would be something i would try, especially seeing as i never got a proper feel of the older AB games
