The Binding of Boggy

Post by ViceroyOfMonteCristo » Sun Dec 06, 2015 8:12 am

I've been playing The Binding of Isaac a lot recently. Quite a lot. So much so, I suppose, that I decided to learn how to create mods for it, since that seems to be what all the cool kids are doing nowadays. For those of you unfamiliar with the game, it's a game about going through randomly-generated areas, finding weapons, and murdering anything and everything.
Sound familiar?
Well it just so happens that _Kilburn is also does really good-looking mods of the game, so I drew up a quick demo of it to see what can be altered (in hopes I can get to where he is someday?)

Our stunning protagonist. As it turns out, Boggy excelled in the armed forces because of his extraordinary ability to violently expel giant bullets from his very face.

Yeah I know, it looks pretty sucky, but I had forgotten how difficult small-scale pixel art can be, and this game is really persnickety about image upscaling.

So I can manage to get item names, descriptions, and sprites changed, so this should be a fun experiment.

I don't know how much I can change, but modding games takes a considerable amount, so I don't know
A. When the mod will be finished, and
B. How many similarities I'll be able to find in weapons between the games.

Regardless, it's gonna be an interesting experience. Feel free to contribute, either in ideas, sprites, or anything else.
Once the mod actually has some quality to it, I'll post the download link here.

Please pay no attention to the massive hole in Boggy's neck. Hey, I said this was a rough demo, didn't I?

Everyone loves strange, obscure callbacks.

Huh. Didn't know the game was that moddable.

Made me really depressed when I tried to play it though. :(
Crap or was it lotion I can't remember
It was lotion.
Well it just so happens that Kilburn is on the Dev team for it
Huh. Like, regular Kilburn, not the underscore version?

Aw dang I gotta go fix that now.

No wait yeah, I mean _Kilburn. And I think I was wrong about that too, it just turns out he does really, REALLY professional mods to the game. I don't think he actually is working with the developers.
I really gotta learn how to not say incorrect things

Hey that's pretty neat.

He should mod some older games like Megaman X into worms and the powerups be different forum members looks and unique power ups.

Because please?

That... Is actually a really good idea.

Typically NES/SNES games can be a little tough to mod, but I'm sure of _Kilburn can muscle through the laborious process of modding in animations and AI scripts for this game (trust me, it's really confusing) then he could do that. I've been meaning to get into NES game modding too, since romhacking isn't necessarily the most difficult modding style available.

Also, the creators of this game just said that an update will be coming out next year to help modders with scripting and animation stuff, so there's that to look forward to.

The Pneumatic Drill
Harness the great mechanical ally of the Darksiders! Using it allows you to immediately travel to the next level (which conveniently happens to be directly below you at all times.)
In America, we call these things "jackhammers" because we're stupid weird.

The Impossible Quiz Book
The universe's greatest secrets, revealed... sometimes. Sometimes it just doesn't really give you any relevant information. Kinda like the games. Thanks, Splapp.

Huntakilla's Dagger
It's got that power curve to it. Every single time I write its name, I accidentally spell it "Daggar" because I'm an idiot. I had to go back into the files and change it after I got a screenshot.

Hold it out in front of you and stab stab stab to your hearts content, or fire it away and it'll come back (everyone knows curved knives act like boomerangs.) Has good synergy with her Headband.

Stay tuned kids, more coming at'cha soon!
