Team17 Forum shutting down
Posted in Other Stuff by SupSuper at 08/06/13 9:31am CEST

After more than 10 years of service, the Official Team17 Forum is shutting down. You might think why it's such a big deal, a forum going away, it's just a website, big whoop.

Well, for me, it was the first online community I ever joined when I got this new-fangled thing called the Internet. And it was a nice place. Everyone was nice and friendly, people discussed all kinds of things, crazy forum games, amazing fan-art, terrible in-jokes, and more. Even Team17 occasionally interacted in there. It was a very silly fun place. I learned a lot of stuff and met a lot of nice people that I still talk to this very day. It was an invaluable experience of my life.

I'm sure a lot of Dream17 staff feel this way. Hell, if it wasn't for the forum, most of us probably would've never met and Dream17 itself would've never existed. How about that! So you know, credit where credit is due and all that. But times change. Team17 changed. The forum ain't what it used to be anymore, and these days it's all social this and blog that, so I understand Team17's decision. No point in clinging to the past really.

But here at Dream17, we're all about clinging to the past! So we've decided to bring back the old Dream17 Forum to fill in for the official forum's absence. Join us in waxing nostalgia and whatever else. Bring back some of that old comunity charm. Oh and we also have a Facebook and Steam Group now if, you know, you're into those things.

Leisure Suit Larry trailer [Arguably NSFW]
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 18/02/08 9:14am CET

If you've been waiting for a trailer, here it is. Remember it's probably Not Safe For Work.

Personally, I'm not impressed. I'm not a huge fan of Leisure Suit Larry as it is, but this seems particularly... well, bad. Yes, it's only an early Teaser Trailer, but in terms of quality it's... it's... it's just bad. The spangly breasts at the end seem wholly unnecessary, but to be fair so does pretty much every other aspect of the trailer, so at least it's consistent if nothing else.

Unreal Engine 3 Licensees Get Supoenas
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 24/01/08 4:54pm CET

Kotaku are reporting that a number of licensees of the Unreal 3 engine have been "issued supoenas to obtain confidential engine contracts". Kotaku lists a few of the companies who have been supoena'd, but it's not a complete list so there's no way of knowing if Team 17 or Sierra/Vivendi have been dragged into this.

The issue, of course, stems from the ongoing battle between Silicon Knights and Epic Games concerning the engine - Silicon Knights feel that certain features promised of the Unreal 3 engine were not implemented when SK were told they would be, and decided to scrap use of the engine on their future titles. The two companies then decided it would be super-fun to sue each other.

Microsoft hate Immigrants: the Little Man vs. Xbox Live
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 10/01/08 8:11am CET

When I moved from the US to the UK in June, I contacted Microsoft about transferring my Xbox Live account to the US system so I could enter my new bank account details and continue to pay for the account. What they did instead was insult me, offend me, hang up on me, send me mocking emails and offered me advice such as "go back to England." Nice, eh? It reached a head yesterday when they contacted GamePartisan, one of the gaming websites I write for, and asked them to drop me from their Editorial line-up. GP's Editor in Chief naturally responded by telling them, in lovely colourful terms using diagrams where appropriate, where they could stick themselves.

I've written an article about the issue, which you can read at the gaming website here. I'd be interested in seeing your feedback.

Artist required for videogame project
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 17/12/07 8:11pm CET

You may know my friend Euan Mumford for his college webcomic, Rooms, and similarly you may know my friend SupSuper for the work he does putting my websites together (apart from my blog, natch). Well they've been working on a point and click adventure game for over a year now, and they've hit a bit of a wall. They need artists.

They've got everything else sorted. The story is 100% complete. The sound is getting there. The game engine itself is built around Adventure Game Studio and utilises some kind of unique, special interface they've coded specifically for the game. The only thing they don't have is character or background artists.

I'm not sure what sort of style they're looking for, but if you're interested in lending a hand you can email either Euan or SupSuper to ask for more info (or you can email me and I will pass your details on). From what they've told me and have been able to show me of the game, it looks really promising - it'd be really cool to see it finished.

Ficlets Caper: Update
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 01/12/07 4:35am CET

Well, you lot appear to have done the trick - "ficlets guy" Kevin Lawyer have emailed me regarding Blondie Babe's ratings and comments:
Hey, I've sent Barbie Babe a note. I can't delete the comments right now, but will look at all of her comments on Monday morning and see about deleting them.

Thanks for your reports!

Thanks to those of you who helped - you can stop now! Smile

The Great Ficlet Caper: Your help required!
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 30/11/07 5:32am CET

Help! Some teenage Neanderthal has buggered up my Ficlets account!
I've rather enjoyed writing ficlets for the past week or so, however recently the intellectually-challenged Blondie Babe took it upon herself to go into every single one of my stories and giving them a single-star rating, as well as leaving a few bitter comments. This has skewed the Average Mark of each of my stories, which isn't really fair, is it?

Why has she done this?
She did this because I dared to give two of her ficlets - the matchless epic "the outcome of divorce part two", and her latest magnum opus, "hi" - poor marks. Actually, I only gave one a poor mark. I left a sarcastic comment on the other. Even still, my primary criticism of her work is that it isn't work at all - these aren't stories, and in most cases they aren't even anything. They appear for the most part to be constructed mostly from random jabs at the keyboard with the sausages attached to her baboon-like hands, only occasionally resembling anything coherent, and even then only by accident.

What can you do?
You can help by going onto her Ficlets page and, rather than giving her stories negative marks, reporting them as Offensive, making sure to state why you're doing it. For clarification, it's because she's mostly posting spam, and also because of her bitter attack on my account. Please make this absolutely clear in your Report, and please DO NOT DO REPORT ALL OF HER STORIES. We don't want to stoop to her level - one or two will suffice (I'd recommend the aforementioned "hi" and this monstrosity, although feel free to pick and choose your own).

What if you're not registered on Ficlets?
If you have an OpenID (such as a LiveJournal account) or an AIM/AOL account, you can sign in to Ficlets using those. I'd like to suggest those of you with a literary mind stick around on Ficlets and give it a go yourself, because it is tremendous fun when there aren't mindless teenage arseburgers* trying to ruin it for the rest of us.

Cheers for the help, people.

* Not to imply, of course, that all teenagers are mindless and/or arseburgers Smile

The slow death of the Team17 Forum
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 31/10/07 4:34pm CET

I've watched as Team17's official forum has slowly changed from a vibrant, fun place to visit, to a place that... well, that isn't. There are some who have chosen to blame this change on the existence of a so-called "secret" forum populated by "Elitist veterans", but the truth is far less conspiratorial: over the past few years - since the released of Worms 3D, I believe - people have signed up to the forum and begin posting without spending any time actually looking at how the community works or, it seems, without looking at or thinking about what they're actually typing. Generally, people spend some time lurking on a forum before they do any actual posting, but more and more people are ignoring this basic courtesy. The forum has suffered for it.

I've spent a lot of time and energy trying to turn things around. I've started new discussions, posted a thread of advice for newcomers to the forum, and I've posted comments in threads that usually I would have turned a blind eye to in the past. Unfortunately, things haven't improved. People are still asking stupid questions about why the DS version of Worms Open Warfare 2 doesnt hav hats y doesnt it ths suxxxx Mad or Evil:mad::mad::mad:, or making ridiculous statements such as the Queen's English being the root of all spoken English in the world, or that removing the Quit function from the PSP version of WOW2 will stop people from quitting in the middle of an game even though they can still turn off the WLAN switch. Generally speaking, the quality of posting on the Team17 Forum has gone remarkably downhill, and to be honest it's not a community I feel part of anymore.

At the moment, I would advise anyone looking to discuss Team17's games with intelligent, like-minded individuals to avoid the Team17 Forum, unless they fancy pulling all of their hair out. At the same time, though, I can't really advocate our own forum because no one ever posts there, although I would like to invite people to start doing so. It seems, at the moment, that Team17 and Worms fans really don't have anywhere to go...

Jump Leads success
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 03/08/07 5:55pm CEST

I know this website is supposed to be for Team17-specific news, but I wanted to share some success I've had on other fronts with you.

You may recall, back at the end of June, my mentioning the then-impending launch of Jump Leads, a science-fiction comedy webcomic created by myself and art'd by JjAR. Well, the Jump Leads website launched on July 6th and in the month since it's launch it has been almost universally priased by all who've seen fit to share their opinion with me. It's been praised by Jeremy Kramer & Eric Vaughn, creators of Truck bearing Kibble (who recently had a comic come second in an IGN comic poll), and Tauhid Bondia, creator of another scifi webcomic, Good Ship Chronicles (and who previously wrote and art'd a superb fantasy-comedy webcomic, Spells & Whistles).

Jump Leads also have a couple of ads currently running over on Starslip Crisis, yet another fantastic scifi-comedy webcomic, and I'm planning on appearing at a couple of conventions next year including the UK Web & Mini Comix Thing 2008 to promote the comic further.

I want to thank those of you who have taken the time to click on the Jump Leads banner when you've seen it up top there. And to the rest of you I ask: What's keeping you? Smile

Jump Leads - coming soon!
Posted in Other Stuff by Squirminator2k at 22/06/07 7:56pm CEST

Fans of science fiction rejoice - my latest project, Jump Leads, launches very soon. I'm a huge scifi and fantasy geek, with a particular interest in Red Dwarf, Doctor Who and H2G2. So it's no surprise that I would take that love and try to craft something of my own. My own science fiction Universe for myself and others to enjoy.

Jump Leads is a webcomic, created and largely written by myself (with additional contributions from numerous people including our very own Worm Mad). The art is provided by the rather exceptional JjAR, whose name you might recognise if you've ever visited the FanArt board on the Team 17 Forum. It looks utterly dazzling.

The script for the first "issue" of Jump Leads was sent to the BBC who enjoyed reading it but ultimately decided to pass, although they did ask me to send them something else. It's some of my best writing, if I do say so myself, and fans of Scifi, comedy, and combinations of the two will undoubtedly get a kick out of it.

The webcomic is due to launch in early July. Watch this space for more information.
